Hi, I am wondering if I can claim expenses for petrol and accommodation whilst my employer had me work away from my usual place of employment for approximately 6 months?

At times I was required to work a shift with less than 10 hours in between shifts, so I had to stay in local accommodation as driving to and from work took me approximately 4 hours total per shift, compared to 1 hour for my usual workplace.

On the bare facts you have presented the answer would be no for both. This is based on two rules.

  1. Trips between home and your regular place of work is not generally deductible.
  2. Accommodation is not deductible if due to your personal circumstances you live a long way from your work.

For 1... Trips you can and can't claim | Australian Taxation Office

For 2...Overnight travel expenses | Australian Taxation Office

If you were to have a discussion with a tax professional where all the facts can be presented then you may get a different answer.

To get an idea of the complexity of this, have a look at the following tax ruling

TR 2021/1 | Legal database

The ruling also discusses the meaning of a regular place of work.
