I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts on Spotify that are directly related to my work for the purposes of professional development and staying informed on the latest news and updates affecting my sector and general practice. Can I claim my spotify premium subscription fee as a tax deduction?

Hi @Natajaaay,

You can't claim your Spotify Premium subscription fee as a tax deduction. The cost of a Spotify subscription is considered a private expense, even if you use it to listen to work-related audiobooks and podcasts for professional development.

The key issue is that Spotify provides access to a general entertainment platform that includes music, podcasts, and other content for personal use. This is similar to newspapers, news services, and general magazine subscriptions, which are private expenses and can't be claimed.

However, you may be able to claim a deduction for specific work-related subscriptions if there's a direct and sufficient connection between your employment duties and the content. Examples of potentially deductible subscriptions include:

  • academic journals
  • technical journals
  • professional library subscriptions
  • online subscriptions to electronic material like e-books or e-journals
  • specialist investment journals and publications for managing investments.

For a subscription to be deductible, the content must be specific to your employment and there must be a direct connection between your work duties and the publication. If your work-related use is incidental to your private use, you can't claim a deduction.

From link

"To claim a deduction for books, periodicals and digital information you must:

  • use them in connection with performing your current work duties"
  • have a record of your expenses and use of the item"

You state that you use this for professional development. That would mean that professional development would need to be part of your current work duties to be able to claim.
