I would like to enquire about my ABN application for a foreign company.

I am currently required to complete identity verification. I have already submitted a certified document signed by a New Zealand JP, but I was advised that it is not accepted.

what the correct identity verification process is, and what type of certification or documents are accepted by the ATO for this.

  • I think the misunderstanding is you need a certified document relative to Australian law
  • New Zealand JP isn't on the list, Australian JP can
  • The page on the abr doesn't tell you what is the requirement, needed to open up the link, 'Copies of identity documents for applicants outside Australia'

"The following people are authorised to certify your identity documents outside Australia:

  • notary publics
  • staff at your nearest Australian
    • embassy
    • high commission
    • consulate – including consulates headed by Austrade honorary consuls."

So I just need to get my ID certified by a New Zealand notary public, right?

I think so, doesn't have to be New Zealand - though that would be the most convenient one for you

I looked up notary public and it seems that any notary's seal is recognised internationally. So seems to me, notary public is recognised on an international level, while JP is recognised on a national level
