Why are we still collecting a recycle duty and paying large sums to recyclers when the industry is making huge profits due to the large increase in market prices due to the middle east conflict?

Hi @Bruceblannin,

The product stewardship for oil program isn't a recycling duty linked to market prices or industry profits. It's a levy collected on petroleum-based oil produced in or imported into Australia to support environmentally sustainable management of used oil.

The levy is collected through excise and customs duty and funds benefits for businesses that recycle or use recycled oil. The aim is to encourage environmental responsibility.

Benefit rates for recyclers vary depending on how much the oil is processed and what the end product is. The program pays benefits in cents per litre across eight categories.

To claim benefits, businesses must hold an excise manufacturer’s licence and pay excise on eligible recycled products.

The program is specifically designed to support recycling activities, regardless of what's happening with international oil market prices.
