Hi ATO,

I moved to Australia in 2023 and joined my super fund provider that same year. I was later granted permanent residency in 2026.

After checking ATO Online Services, I noticed that I can only see unused concessional contribution cap amounts from the years following my first super contribution, for example the financial years 2023–2024, 2024–2025, and 2025–2026. I cannot see any unused concessional contribution cap amounts for earlier years before I moved to Australia or opened my first superannuation account.

Could you please advise whether it is possible to access or carry forward unused concessional contribution caps from the five years, including years prior to moving to Australia and opening my first super account?

Thank you.

Hi @mr_pepper,

No, you can't access or carry forward unused concessional contribution cap amounts from years before you moved to Australia and joined a super fund. In your situation, the unused cap amounts you can carry forward started accumulating from the 2023–24 financial year. This is the first year you had a super fund in Australia.

Years before you moved to Australia and opened your super account in 2023 won't appear in your carry forward amounts, even though the carry forward rules technically started in 2018–19. This is because the system tracks your unused caps based on your Australian super history.

You can check your available carry forward concessional contribution amounts by logging into ATO online services and selecting Super, then Information, then Carry forward concessional contributions. Your total super balance must be less than $500,000 at 30 June of the previous financial year to use any carried forward amounts.
