Hi,

Is there a meal breakdown for overseas locations (for example, breakfast, lunch and dinner), similar to the domestic travel allowance rates outlined in the Taxation Determination?

I haven’t been able to find an equivalent breakdown for overseas locations and is only allocated one rate type 'Meals' in the ATO TD. Is there a way to obtain the breakfast, lunch and dinner rate breakdown for each overseas location?

Thanks

Hi @TAHASA,

No, there isn't a meal breakdown for overseas locations in the ATO Taxation Determination. For overseas travel, we provide a single daily rate for food and drink (meals) rather than separate amounts for breakfast, lunch and dinner like we do for domestic travel.

The reasonable amount for overseas food and drink is set as a daily rate. This means the costs you incur for food and drink during each day you're travelling for work only needs to be less than the reasonable daily amount. You don't need to track individual meals separately.

For domestic travel, we publish reasonable amounts for breakfast, lunch and dinner separately, and you must consider each meal separately to work out whether your claim is reasonable. However, for overseas travel, you assess your total daily meal expenses against the single daily rate for that overseas location.
