We are a couple that arrived in Australia on the 27/03/2026 from the UK on a WHV. We have no financial ties to the UK, have a 6 month lease on an apartment and are working. Do we class as Australian Residents for tax purposes? We are unsure if we need to submit a return to claim the tax free allowance.

If you consider yourselves as Australian tax residents you need to lodge a tax return which indicates this is the case. The ATO will then make a determination.
With myTax you personalise your tax return when preparing it. See how this is done below

If you are completing a TFN declaration with an employer question 8 is the relevant question. If you are a WHM then you indicate this. You will be taxed at WHM rates regardless of what you consider your tax residency is, as you can't claim the tax-free threshold if you are a WHM (see question 9)
