Hi,

Does anyone know what happens in this situation?

  • Each monthly pay, I pay a certain amount for STSL loans (HECS).
  • I paid off my HECS debt in October 2025. I received the % return recently, as CR but this was showing CR /balance to receive for the overall outstanding HECS debt which I had paid 10/25.
  • Between July 2025-October 2025, my payslips / pay would have taken out the required repayment.

What happens to the money that was given to HECS during that pay? Do I owe money back now? does it come back as taxable income?

Thanks,

M

  • The amounts that were taken are additional PAYG withholding. It would be tax credits in the tax return. For the July 2025-October 2025, it would be tax credits for 2026 tax return which would come out in July 2026
  • HECS account can only be paid via voluntary and compulsory repayments. The PAYG withholding wouldn't have been paid into your HECS account, you can check it by looking at the transactions in your HECS account

Do I owe money back now? does it come back as taxable income?

  • A credit in the ATO account is a refund for you; debit would be a payable to ATO
  • Money =/= Income
  • If you mean the 20% reduction, no it's not income
