Our accountant finally lodged it on 13/5 and advised us he had applied for an extension but now we find we have been fined. So I’m unsure if he didn’t apply for an extension or if you are fined regardless of the extension? We had all paperwork to him by end of August 2025 so it’s rather frustrating. Apparently the ATO assessed it on 22/5 but accountant is claiming they knew nothing of the notice of assessment until it arrived in the mail this week. Would the fine be because the ATO assessed it on 22/5 and we didn’t pay it immediately (because we didn’t know it had been assessed) or simply because it wasn’t lodged until 13/5? We have now paid the tax liability but not the fine as yet.
