I worked as an Uber Eats delivery driver during the financial year as gig/sole trader work. During the financial year, I owned two cars which I have used for Uber Eats delivering as well. I did not owned or used both cars at the sametime.

  • Car 1 - July to November
  • Car 2 - November to June

I have records/estimates of the business kilometres travelled for Uber Eats for each vehicle.

  • Car 1 - 6,040 km
  • Car 2 - 2,333 km

I am planning to claim motor vehicle expenses using the cents per kilometre method.

My question is does the 5,000 business kilometre limit apply separately to each eligible car, or is it a total limit across all cars used for the business?

Thank You.

If you have the records that constitute a log book, you may want to at least run the calcs, you may be surprised how much more you can claim that way than cents per km. Even if you don't have fuel receipts, you can calculate the fuel using average fuel price data and average consumption for your vehicle. Add in rego, insurance, depreciation, servicing etc.. and it adds up fast

Thank You for the idea. I will consider it for the next tax year since there is not enough time to record a log book for this tax year.

You don't need to have completed the log book this financial year - you just need to have started it this year and to run it for the full 12 week, even if that is mostly in the next financial year (s28-120(2) The period may overlap the start or end of the income year so long as it includes part of the year.
