I received an email from ATO saying "Our records indicate that you’ve underreported your spouse’s income in previous financial years."
I've checked back the last three years tax statements (which I save when I submit online - I do both my return and my wife's returns) - and the taxable income line on my wife's return match the taxable income under Spouse Details in my return (and vice-versa) for all years.
Note that last year was the first year I used an accountant for my wife's return as her situation had become more complicated. Still, I used the taxable income amount for my spouse from the paperwork from the accountant (the electronically signed version) in my return.
Am I doing something wrong, did my accountant make a mistake, or has a mistake been made on the ATO side in sending this email? How can I investigate further? The email threatens dire consequences. (OK, a bit of an exaggeration...)
