I attended a conference oversea & stay with my parents or grandpa, I paid them $150 a night in lieu of hotel stay. How much can I claim as accommodation for tax deduction?

Also, they send me for conference in their car. How much can I claim as travel for tax deduction? Can I follow their local transport reimbursement practise, that is based on mileage?

If I travel in car for lunch & dinner, can I also claim for tax deduction?

Hey @sgp8895

Interesting questions.

You would not be able to claim staying with family. As an employee travelling away from their home overnight for work usually isn't, or can't be, accompanied by family or have family or friends visit them. This could be viewed as personal.

For your travel expenses you incurred you would need to keep travel expense records for the expenses you incurred during your travel. You would not be able to use the local transport reimbursement practice as that is not within the requirements of the Australian tax system.

My Family is located oversea. Instead of staying in the hotel, I stayed in their house. The transport is not incurred in Australia. It is in oversea country. How can I claim tax deduction for these?

Hi @sgp8895,

When you travel for work you need to split your expenses between business and personal. Staying with your relatives is personal. You're unable to claim the $150.00 per night you paid them to stay as a deduction.

You'll need to look at doing the same with your car/travel expenses.
