Hello there, appreciate your collective wisdom:


Background:

I am a (very) rural GP who lives in a small town of 600 pop. As such I am on-call 24/7.


Situation:

I am looking to buy a doctor's bag to hold my equipment at home for when / if I am called overnight / for emergency home visits. I will also be using this bag to travel to conferences out of town.


Question:

Supposedly I wanted to buy an expensive work bag $3000-4000 for this purpose will that be a problem with the ATO?


Is there an upper limit to the costs of work bags we are allowed to purchase? Assume I only get 1 for the entire scope of my work.

Hello there @drrr,


You can claim a deduction for a work-related expense if:

  • You must have spent the money yourself and weren’t reimbursed
  • The expense directly relates to you earning income
  • You have a record to prove it (receipt)

 

Because the bag will be more than $300, You cannot claim the deduction all at once. You will need to claim your deduction over time as a depreciating asset.
