I retired from my main job mid way through the year. I have a superannuation pension which is taxed at a low rate.

I do unpaid mentoring work at a University and this work involved the purchase of some items to help the students that I mentored complete their project. I also needed to use my home office that have meetings with the students and to review and help with the woork of the University.

Can I claim these expenses incurred while carrying out the unpaid part of the work as a deduction against my total taxable income?

No, because the expenses were not incurred for the purpose of earning assessable income.
