I've never had to pay the M2 Medicare Levy Surcharge, since I have private health insurance.
This year, I'm in a defacto relationship, so I'm having to include my spouse's income to lodge my tax return. No dependents: we're just a couple.
If I have Private Health Insurance but my partner does not, am I still exempt from the M2 Medicare Levy Surcharge?
I'd assume I am exempt, but my partner is not: i.e. I pay nothing, but she'd have to pay the surcharge. (The surcharge calculated from whatever tier our combined income falls under.)
If so, how do I let the ATO know? My estimated tax return included the M2 levy surcharge. But this is an estimate only and I'm hoping this may change in the final assessment.
If I'm not exempt, does that mean I'm being taxed for my partner's health insurance decisions? I need to know going forward for next year's income tax return, as it'll affect what future private health insurance plans we'll need to make. (Not sure getting separated is a good alternate solution, but times are tough right now.)
Any help would be appreciated!
