If I do not meet the threshold of $48,361 yet money is taken out of my pay for compulsory STSL payments how is that money returned to me.

Hi @Raym2022

If you have made payments and you do not meet the current threshold, when you do your tax return for that financial year, any additional amount remaining after we have calculated your tax liabilities will be refunded to you when we finish processing your return.

Thankyou so did I have to declare that STSL compulsory payments had come out of my pay in my tax return when I do it , as I didn't thought and the ATO has yet to refund the amount as I was under the threshold.

Hi @RayC,

You don’t have to declare that your employer withheld extra to cover your study loan.

If you ticked the box on your withholding declaration stating that you have a study loan, then your employer will withhold a little extra on top of your tax.

When your employer submits this to us, it isn’t split up as tax or STSL payments – it’s one figure.

Once you submit your return, we work out how much you still owe or if you’re entitled to a refund.

On your notice of assessment, you’ll see one figure for all the money withheld during the year. You’ll also see your total owing.

If what you’ve paid throughout the year is more than what’s owing, you’ll receive a refund to your chosen bank account.
