Hi,

Recently I was not able to join my ATO to my gov because I had updated my mobile phone to a new one. So I had to go to a tax office to link my ATO to my Gov account. Hence then was I notified that I could claim the Medicare levy exemption.

I used to do my tax return by myself every-time. I was an international student from 2019 finally graduated on march 2023 now I am in my temporary graduation Visa.

Will I be able to claim back the Medicare levy exemption from 2019 if not then from what year could I do it? Also how can I do it? I have already applied for MES from 2019 just waiting on the results .

kind regards .

Hello @Bitishakarki,

Yes, you can amend your tax returns if you have incorrectly filed something in them. You do this by sending in an amendment tax return to show us what should of been reported. If you are doing this due to you being eligible for Medicare exemption you should get the exemption certificate from Medicare before sending in your request. Also there is a time limit for amendments of two years from date of receipt of your notice of assessment. In some cases if that time period has been exceed you will need to lodge an objection with the returns outside the time period explaining why they should be accepted.
