With VISA 482, I have applied for MES under "Full Exemption for 365 Days" when filling out the tax return.

Since my MES is expected 1st week of November, but I was thinking to wait until 28 Oct before filing tax return (with or without MES letter).

However, am not sure if I can file for tax return without the MES letter. Please help advise.

Hey OxideN7 & Sudhir,

The ATO has released some updated guidelines - If you apply for a 2023 MES before 17 March 2024 but have not received it at the time you're lodging your tax return, you can still complete the Medicare levy exemption question as though you have your statement.

So go ahead and lodge your tax returns if they are due tomorrow!

Cheers.

You need to have your Medicare Exemption Statement before you prepare your tax return. In this instance, you may need to wait until you receive the letter before filing your tax return.

If you are getting your income tax return with a tax agent, you may have until May 2024 to lodge your 2023 tax return.

Hi Ansil,

So I am wanting to confirm that the advise here is to wait for the MES to be granted, regardless of whether that means that I may have to lodge after the 31st October deadline?

Also, are there official channels that you maybe aware of, which I can use to help expedite my MES from Services Australia?
