Hi,


I came to Australia on a WHV March 22. Then I went on to a bridging visa, to my current visa which is a 408 Visa. I am from the U.K . I am in the process of completed a tax return my question is.


Do I have to pay the Medicare levy? Also my Medicare cover I have had hasn't lasted my whole trip as my card had expiring after a year and had to wait for my other card, so I presume I wasn't covered for a period of time. I earnt approx $80,000 for that financial year.

Hi @Tarabu,


Your VISA status doesn’t determine if you pay the Medicare levy or not, it’s your tax residency status.


If you’re a foreign resident for tax purposes and fit into one of the exemption categories, you don’t pay the Medicare levy.


If your tax residency changed and you became an Australian resident for tax purposes during the financial year then you’d only claim the exemption for the dates you were foreign tax resident.
