A fraudulent ABN was created using my identity - how can I get it cancelled or remove its association to me?
I have called the ATO who said they've created a case and will refer me to CISC but I haven't heard back since. They've removed the fraudulent details of this bad actor from my ATO portal profile but that's pretty much been it.
They've advised me to call MyGov, Medicare, and a whole bunch of other agencies including Centrelink, my bank, IDcare, etc so that I can try to mitigate the effects of this. I have done this but the general consensus is that until something "actually happens", there isn't much further action I can take right now.
On ABN LookUp I can see the ABN is still active and I have been trying to get this situation rectified (i.e. the ABN cancelled) for over a month to no avail. Since I did not create the ABN, I don't know what aspect of my identity they used for the registration. I can see that they've registered for GST which means that I'll be liable for whatever they decide to do with this fraudulent ABN.
I am also concerned that if I take drastic measures, the fraudster will get tipped off and decide to escalate their plans with the ABN and I will get stung with the consequences.
How can I cancel this ABN once and for all?
