Hi all,

When renting out one room, on ATO portal it says

Common expenses you can claim a portion of as deductions include:

  • council rates
  • interest on a loan for the property
  • electricity and gas
  • property insurance
  • cleaning and maintenance costs (products used or hiring a commercial cleaner).

Could anyone please tell me how about internet? Is it tax deductible like council rates?

Thank you very much.

Hi @Lily987,

Short answer - no.

To be able to claim a deduction, the expense must directly relate to earning income from renting out the room. As you'd still be able to rent the room without providing internet it's not a deductible expense.
