Me and wife have private medical insurance for entire tax year 2022-23 and our combined income is over 230k.

Our Baby was born in March 2023 and was only added to medical insurance mid October 2023(due to lack of information). When filing for 2022-23 tax do we (me and my wife) have to pay Medical Levy surcharge (for the 3 months or so period since childs birth) just because newborn was not added to Private medical insurance? If yes is there a way to get exempted as a one off?

Thanks in advance

Hi @PD3D,

Congratulations on the birth of your child.

Although only a few months old, your new baby is considered a dependant as they're under 21 years old for Medicare levy surcharge (MLS) purposes.

I totally understand when you've a newborn, adding them to your medical insurance may not be in the forefront of your mind. When you and your wife complete your tax returns, at the question where it asks if you and all your dependants had an appropriate level of private patient hospital cover you'll have an opportunity to tell us the number of days that you did. We'll calculate MLS on the number of days you didn't.

Enjoy your new bub!
