I am a New Zealand citizen currently living in Australia (have been here longer than 6 month). I am currently employed by an Australian company and also a New Zealand company therefore receiving income in both countries. For tax purposes and regarding the Double Tax Agreement will I be required to include my Australian income in my New Zealand tax return and vice versa? Under the DTA tie breaker rule I believe the last option is relevant to me and therefore I am deemed to be a resident of the state which I am a national (being New Zealand).
We’re not able to tell you if you need to include your Australian income in your NZ tax return or not, you’ll need to follow that part of your enquiry up with Inland Revenue.
For your obligation in Australia that one we can help with 😊.
First step is to work out if you’re a resident for tax purposes this is different to a residency status. If you are an Australian resident for tax purposes, you will need to report both your Australian and NZ (foreign and worldwide) income in your tax return.
You can work out your status on our Australian resident for tax purposes page, you may also be eligible for the Australian foreign income tax offset, the offset provides relief from paying double tax on your foreign and worldwide income (NZ)
