Hi, I left Australia almost 10 years ago. I must have not done something correctly at the time as I have just received a letter in the post (I now live in the UK) saying I owe money for not filing this years tax return. a bit of background info...
- I am originally from NZ so lived in Australia without the need for any Visa's (lived there 2012-2014)
- I have not received any communication for previous years, but I have just managed to log into MyGov and it says 10 years worth of tax returns are overdue (2014 - now)
- It also says all payments are up to date (although letter I've received says otherwise)
- I have entered Australia several times in the past ten years on trips back home, and nothing has been flagged at Passport control
- I have tried to lodge the most recent years tax return, but I cannot get past the first steps as I don't have an Australian bank account anymore
- I've tried calling the number on the letter I received and it won't accept calls from outside the country, and not sure on what number to call (hesitant to try any number as it'll cost a bomb!). And there is no email listed, only postal address.
- I have Superannuation money still in Aus, as I cannot draw this out or transfer to NZ - as I would need to reside there. They won't allow me to transfer to UK or withdraw.
Can anyone advise on what I should do? How do I tell the ATO I have left the country for good? Do I need to file a paper tax return? Any advise of info would be greatly appreciated!
