I am 15 years old and do not have a tax file number (tfn) i earnt more than $700 last fortnight and was taxed 47%? Is that correct? and How do i get the tax back? I have selected tax file exemption as under 18 on my declaration and selected the tax free threshold?

Hi @Mandyritchie

You don’t have provide a TFN to your employer. It’s not compulsory.

But to claim the exemption from quoting a TFN when you’re under 18 you must also earn below the tax-free threshold.

If you’ve earned more than the $700 a fortnight that’s the same as earning above the tax-free threshold.

So, in your case, you didn’t meet the rules for the exemption.

Your employer then must withhold the top rate of tax.

When you lodge your tax return at the end of the financial year is when you'll see if you’re due a refund or not.

If they haven't quoted a TFN, how is the withholding going to appear in their tax return?

Presumably the ATO won't know on whose behalf the tax was withheld. Am I missing something here?
