Hi everyone

I made a lump sum concessional contribution during the previous FY. I used up 3 years of ‘rollover super caps’. I sent my super fund the NOI FORM. They confirmed they received it.

When filing in my FY2023 tax return via MyGov, is there anything that should appear on my tax return to show that I’ve used up my previous years caps?

My tax agent says something should appear that isn’t there. My superfund will not assist.

Would be grateful for any replies.

Hello there @Lexie1900,

This is a really good question. I was surprised to find out this doesn't show on your tax return!

You can make concessional contributions at any time. There's a limit to how much you can make each year. Turns out when you don't go over this limit, any leftovers rollover automatically. You won't see this on the return, but you can still find info about it online.

To find concessional contributions, click Super, then information and then concessional contributions.

To see carry-forward amounts, click Super, then information and then carry forward concessional contributions.

There is a section on the return where you can claim a deduction for the contributions you made. You can find info about this on our MyTax2023 Personal Superannuation Contributions page.

Thanks. I able to navigate to this page and see my unused super caps.

I made a large contribution ($43k) to my super fund in FY2023. They have confirmed that they sent a NOI to the ATO. I want to claim it as a concessional contribution.

I still don't know whether the ATO has marked this as concessional.

I can see from the page you directed me to that I still have space in my super caps. I thought they would have been removed as I did make the 43k contribution which I had hoped would have been marked as concessional.

My superfund and tax agent do not know the answer to the above questions. I am out of options here as I don't know who else to contact. It is difficult to reach ATO by phone so I am posting here.

Hi @Lexie1900

Thanks so much for reaching out.

Yes, how you lodge this info through your tax return is very important.

You can claim a deduction for the amount of the contribution stated on the Notice of intent.

This must be claimed at Personal Super contributions.

This will be how we tie it all together.

So, you make your contribution, and you lodge your Notice of intent with the superfund within the required timeframe.

The Superfund acknowledges the Notice of Intent.

They report that to us.

Then you claim this as a deduction in your tax return.

All these steps need to be actioned.

So, the contributions are allocated correctly.

As long as you can see there's enough room in your cap.

There should be nothing you need you to worry about.

Please lodge your income tax return and claim the deduction and we’ll get the contribution sorted for you.

Check out our further info on How to complete the tax return when you've made a personal superannuation contribution.

@Deb_ATO

Thank you for this reply.

I have followed the steps you listed.

Should I see anything in my FY2023 tax return form on MyGov to show that the Superfund has sent something to the ATO?

My Superfund confirmed they have told ATO about the contributions.

Thanks again.
