I have had received a letter from ATO twice this year, both letters are exactly the same except "Our Reference". The letters mentioned I have CGT needs to report due to shares sold (which I don't own shares account) . I have called ATO through interpreter line. ATO said the "our reference" should be numbers not letters. The reference in my letter is "IAI-CGTS-PD". So, ATO started to ask my passport number, centerlink number, driver licence number, it feel like a scam.

So, is this letter a true letter from ATO???

Hi @777pikapika

Seems a little off.

If we issue a letter the reference number is a series of numbers starting with a particular set of numbers, we have particular 4-5 digits at the start of our references. We do have case numbers which start with a single letter followed by numbers.

This letter doesn't seem to fit the profile of our letters.

To be sure. it's always best to check with us, we will need to complete your ID, and will require certain questions to be answered, but rest assured, your details are safe with us.
