30% income tax is really high for an international student who only got a casual job in Australia. Can I lower the income tax rate by any chance or ask for tax refund next year?

Hi @Yif,

Hmm 🤔 if you're an international student, it sounds like you are being taxed as a foreign resident.

If you are being taxed correctly by your employer, you can't request a lower tax rate.

When it comes to tax refunds, it's not asking for a refund so much as lodging your tax return. We work out your taxable income from the details you enter and from data matching. Then if you have claimed any work-related expenses, this would reduce your taxable income.

There are only a few circumstances where you may get a refund from your tax return. The main one is usually if the employer has withheld more than required for your tax obligations. 😊
