Since I started my job in late feb 2023 I have been paid per shift by my boss as I’m only a casual employee and never worked more than 6 hours a week till these holidays( I work cleaning motel rooms) now after working new yrs day and everyday since then he’s suddenly insisting I register for an abn before he will pay me for my last week and a bit work. Currently m paid a flat 25 dollars a hour no matter if it’s a public holiday or not. Something about this seems off or am I being paranoid?

Not being paranoid. Google "sham contracting" to find out what your employer appears to be doing. You can report the employer to the ATO if you think that's the case. See link.

@Taxduck thanks for your response I tried to contact the ABR and they told me to just keep applying for a ABN if that’s what my employer wants. This conflicted with the advice on the ABR and the ato websites. So even though I told them my boss is withholding my pay till I got a abn and fill out invoices in the manner he wanted and all for a flat rate of 25 a hour that’s when I was told to just keep applying for an ABN. Really lost as to what steps to take next I really want to keep my job.
