My niece is a dual citizen (France/Australia). She has not lived in Australia but may travel here later this year for about two months and may want to work. She will be 17. Does she just apply for a Tax File Number, get a job, a super account and start working? Will she need a MyGov or can she get a TFN without that hassle? Does she then lodge a tax return (next year) when back in France? So many questions sorry.

Hi @humbugrobyn,

What a great opportunity for your niece to travel and work! All good with the questions that's what we are here for.

Yes, your niece will need to apply for TFN if she is going to work here.

Your niece can apply for a TFN online via myGovID if eligible to and has sufficient documentation. If not, she can apply by using the Australian residents - TFN application instead that does not involve using myGovID.

We do suggest setting up myGov and link to ATO. You can only do this once your niece has her TFN.

We have a handy ATO online services tool - Do I need to lodge a tax return. This will advise your niece if she needs to lodge depending on her circumstances.

Thanks so much Wendy - very helpful. I think we'll just do the standard TFN application for now and see about MyGov when she gets here. I'll visit the tax returns site you shared too.

Do you have any idea about how long it might take her to get the TFN once she does the online application?
