As a sole trader visual artist, are the fees charged by galleries when entering art prizes and exhibitions an eligible deduction/business expense? The ones I am referring to specifically are ones that your artwork is guaranteed to be shown, not ones where your artwork is still subject to a selection committee even though you've already paid a non-refundable fee. I assume that the ones where your artwork is still subject to a selection committee would be classed as an 'interview' or 'getting work'?

Hello @confusedartist

It really depends on if you're operating as a business or hobby.

Business is usually a recuring activity with intention on making a profit, whereas a hobby is more recreational.

If you're definitely in business, you can claim fees, whereas hobbies are personal expenses that can't be claimed.
