If a 52-year-old client sells his Investment Property owned by his SMSF in the accumulation phase and incurs a capital loss, what would be the tax treatment for it?

1. Can he offset this loss against other gains within the SMSF assets made in the same year?

2. Can he carry forward this capital loss to the next year?

  1. Yes
  2. Yes - to the extent that the loss could not be applied to current year capital gains.
