I’m planning on moving from the UK to Australia early this year on a Working Holiday Visa with the hope of getting sponsored to work for an employer within 6 months. I currently have monetised YouTube and TikTok channels which earn me money every month - not life-changing money, but enough to be considered a “side-hustle”. I wondered if I would still be able to receive these payments whilst in Australia and how I would go about paying tax on them.

Hello there @ss_14,

Asking the hard questions today I see!

Normally, a working holiday maker is a foreign resident for tax purposes. You are from a non-discrimination article country though. - Just file this link away in case your situations changes ;)

Foreign residents report any income earned in Australia. This can include:

  • employment income
  • rental income
  • Australian pensions and annuities
  • capital gains on Australian assets

The fact you have monetised your content does suggest you are in business. This means you need to report any income you get from this while you're in Australia. You'll need to keep records.

You would report this on your Tax Return at the end of our financial year.
