I work for an NGO and i have to travel overseas for work. My employer covers economy travel. I have documented health reasons that support the need for business class travel. If I pay to upgrade can I claim the cost?

Hello @FJY

That's a very good question, yes you can!

If you and your employer co-pay for higher cabin class flights when initially purchasing the tickets for work related travel or you choose to pay the additional upgrade, then the additional costs are deductible as part of costs of ‘travelling on work’ while away from home.

You can find more info on TR 2021/4. (Whilst the ruling primarily concerns costs of accommodation and food the relevant principles are considered to apply equally to the cost of flights, irrespective of how they are incurred or calculated.)
