Hi there,

I've temporarily moved overseas as of January 2023 and taken care of my tax payable for the 22/23 Financial year, up until the point where I was no longer resident for tax purposes in Australia.

I've since then received a form in the mail regarding PAYG instalments for the current financial year.

The problem is, I have still not returned home and don't plan to until at least the 24/25FY, so I will have no Australian income to pay tax on.

I've contacted the ATO via phone and I was told I can just vary each instalment (theoretically, down to 0 every time). The issue is, will I not just be building up a debt until the end of the financial year?

Ideally, I would like to dismiss the instalments completely and clarify to the taxation office that I will not have any income in Australia this year.

If I just keep varying the instalments down to 0. Can I at the end of the year report no income without any issues?

Or do I need to call back and again attempt to notify that I will not be earning in Australia, and only plan to return after this FY?

Any help and information is much appreciated.

Thank you

Hi @azy146,

For the 23/24 FY and 24/25FY will you be receiving any instalment income? If no, then varying it to nil will be fine. Or you could potentially exit the PAYGI system.

We have a handy article called answers to your PAYG instalment questions, check it out for info on how you can exit if you are eligible to.

You won't accumulate a debt on PAYGI as you've determined that you need to pay nothing.

If you do have instalment income, our page on how to vary your PAYG instalment explains what happens if you underestimate.
