Hi there,

Your help is much appreciated!

I have recently been made redundant from my full time job and am about to enter my second trimester of pregnancy which is making job hunting difficult - as most new roles are not interested in someone who could only work for the next six months. I am finding it hard to find either permanent, contract or even part time casual work.

I have an ABN which I registered for a small business a while ago (selling womens pyjamas - it never took off!) but I am wondering if I can use this ABN for freelance work? I have the possibility of getting freelance work from a few small businesses who do not have the means to take on part time casual staff, but quite willing to pay freelancers here and there.

My other query is - I have applied to Centrelink for Jobseeker payments. They have told me I cannot have a period of 12 weeks or above of being unemployed before the baby is born, if I am still to qualify for Paid Parental Leave. If I worked under my ABN in freelance capacity, would this count towards me 'working'? I am very anxious not to lose my PPL payments so want to ensure I am working in ways that Centrelink will recognise. I understand ATO may not be able to advise on this matter but if anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

Hello @Cupoteawillhelp,

Yes you can use your ABN for other work. Many sole traders have multiple income streams under their ABN's. As for the criteria for Centrelink jobseeker payments you will need to confirm with them what is or isn't work.
