Hello, I was a canadian student studying in australia for 3 years and left in June 2019. I recently received a letter from an online tax broker with attached ATO emails saying I could be prosecuted and faced hefty fines for not lodging my 2019,2021,2022,2023 taxes imminently. I haven't lived in australia for 5 years and am not sure how to handle this, any help would be much appreciated! I thought that as a foreign student once leaving I wouldn't have to keep filing my taxes, can you please clarify this situation? Also is there a toll free number I can sort this out potentially? Thank you.
Hey @mh89,
No, generally once you leave Australia you won't need to continue lodging tax returns. But if you didn't tell us on the last tax return you lodged that it was your final return, we'd be expecting you to still be lodging.
You're going to need to tell us that you no longer need to lodge tax returns in Australia. You can do this online or by using the non-lodgement advice form.
