Building off of How do you do your taxes as a beginner twitch streamer? | ATO Community I've been wondering a question for a while, for streamers, it is not uncommon (actually fairly common) for streamers to use gifted subscriptions and bit donations as a method of advertising themselves to other streamers and communities (IE: "Here is 20 donations, please notice me!" or weekly "5 gifted subscriptions so that your community is aware of me!")

Since this is a business expense in the form of advertising, is it ok to count it as a business expense?

Additional question: Sometimes there are competitions/challenges where a streamer will be required to gift subscriptions to their own community. This engages the community, makes them stick around (there is a lot of reasons for it). Would this be tax deductible? Would it be 100% deductible, or only the 70% cut that Twitch takes?

Hi again @mGeorge,

Thanks for your patience while we checked this out. 🎮

So, the cost of gift subscriptions and bit donations on Twitch are deductible - to the extent that these are business expenses, not personal. If they're 100% a business expense, you can deduct the full amount.

Where you gift a sub that you've paid for, and you then get an amount back as a payment from Twitch, you'd claim an entire deduction for the sub and then declare the payment from Twitch for the subscription as income.

As for bit donations, it's important to keep records of what donations are personal vs business related. Again, you only claim those business donations as a deduction.
