Hi, I am a licensed second-hand dealer that buys/sells second-hand goods as a soletrader.

The distances I travel in my car vary from 10km-400km to purchase/deliver these goods (leaving personal use of the vehicle to <10% per financial year).

What are the vehicle expenses that I claim when I lodge my personal tax return?

The ones I am aware of are:

  1. Vehicle Logbook Method (https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals-and-families/income-deductions-offsets-and-records/deductions-you-can-claim/cars-transport-and-travel/motor-vehicle-and-car-expenses/expenses-for-a-car-you-own-or-lease)
  2. Vehicle Depreciation (https://www.ato.gov.au/tax-and-super-professionals/for-tax-professionals/prepare-and-lodge/tax-time/tax-time-toolkits/tax-time-toolkit-small-business/small-business-guides/motor-vehicle-expenses#ato-Depreciationdeclineinvalueofamotorvehicle)

Additionally, can I claim both in that Financial Year?

Hi @JerryG

The logbook is used to work out the deductible portion of your car if you use it for private purposes as well.

If you worked out you use your car 90% of the time for your business then you'd claim 90% of your car expenses. You can claim the running costs of your car and the decline in value in the same year. Examples of expenses include fuel, oil, maintenance, rego and insurance etc. You need to make sure you keep your receipts.
