My Novated Lease provider has just mentioned they are changing the way I can claim Electricity costs for charging my EV. Previously, I've made the claim each month and attached the screenshot from my vehicle's mobile app to confirm electricity used.

They are now saying the ATO have changed the requirements and need me to choose one of the following claim options...

  • Install a stand-alone meter to validate my claim, and continue claiming the amount of KWh used. (Seems pointless given my current practices)

Or

  • Use the cost per KM method, apparently will be about 4 cents per KM.

Can you confirm this is accurate, please?

Hi @TyroneMc,

That's correct. When using an at home charging station, you can claim the EV charging rate times by KM's travelled which is 4.2 cents per KM. Otherwise, you can choose to use the cents per KM method (logbook method) which is the same as claiming for a car.

Have a look at our ruling in PCG 2023/D1-Electric vehicle home charging rate for further guidance.
