Hi,

I have been told by many people that when salary sacrificing, you pay less in tax throughout the financial year. However, I have also been told that when you have a HECS debt and you salary sacrifice, you should inform your payroll to take out extra tax to cover your hecs debt repayments. This I do not understand. I have just started salary sacrificing for the purpose of purchasing leave and have a HECS debt. How does this impact me? How are fringe benefits calculated? If I am asking my work to take more tax out while salary sacrificing, doesn't that just defeat the purpose of supposably paying less in tax when salary sacrificing?

Try the Study loan repayment calculator. This will calculate what your compulsory repayment amount will be. You will need to know your total reportable fringe benefit amount and taxable income for year.

@Taxduck thank you for your response. I know how to work out my repayment for HECS if I wasn't salary sacrificing. However, I'm confused on how the total reportable fringe benefit is calculated. I've read the ATO site on this but still confusing. Do you have an example of how to work the total reportable fringe benefit?
