Hi,

I am trying to understand the rules regarding registering your ABN for GST as an allied health provider.

I keep reading that you have to start charging GST when you earn more than 75k. However as an allied health practitioner, the vast majority of my work is GST free. So I would likely not reach the 75k threshold (or so I had assumed).

Recently I was told that actually, I do still have to register for GST. They say that because my overall ABN earnings is over 75k, I still have to register and charge GST for the portion of my work, lets say 4k, that is not allied health treatment work.

In other words, it doesn't matter where your ABN earnings come from, if it is over 75K you have to pay/ charge GST for the portion that is not health treatment work. Is this correct?

Thanks for your help.

This link explains when you must register for GST. https://www.ato.gov.au/businesses-and-organisations/gst-excise-and-indirect-taxes/gst/registering-for-gst

If your gross income from all your business activities exceeds $75,000 in a 12 month period then you must register for GST.

If much of your income is GST free then take advantage of being registered for GST as the GST in all your business expenses can be claimed back as a credit.
