Hi, I will be arriving soon in Australia for the first time and on a PR186 visa. I am planning to continue working from home with the EU company i worked with. The company has no branch in AUS and as i have read one way would be to register as sole trader apply for my ABN and invoice the company. I would just like to clarify things regarding GST, I am a software engineer/programmer and the application is not used in AUS and my income would be more than $ 75000, should i still register for a GST and pay GST tax?

Second thing can i immediately start working with them while i still register my TFN and ABN once i arrive in Australia and pay the tax normally. Thank you

Hi @Rhemi,

That's right, if you're not going to be an employee then as contractor you may need an ABN. Check the information in our article What remote working means for your tax return. Specifically, under the heading 'I work remotely in Australia for a foreign employer - how am I taxed?'

You must register for GST when your business has gross income from all businesses minus GST of $75,000 or more.

To understand if you need to charge GST refer to our exports and GST page. Under the heading 'When services are used outside Australia'. This will help you work out if the service you're providing is GST-free or not.

Check you're eligible for an ABN before you start working remotely in Australia.
