I voluntarily paid off my HECS, but when I opened my myGov this year, I found that I had a debt again. It says "repayment credit amended". if the debt is paid off, it should mean that I didn't owe any money. How can I owe money again after modifying a tax return? isn't this endless? Can anyone please explain it to me? Thank you. it's too stressful.

Hi @szhi121,

There are a couple of things that could affect the balance.

  • If there was an amount owing on the 1st June when the debt was indexed this would add to the loan.
  • the learning institution changed the debt amounts or
  • you amended your income tax return which reduced the amount of HECS that was applied to your debt in that year.
