I have rung the ATO. I have rung the NAB. Who can correct this?

Since 2021-2022 tax year, there has been an NAB account which I don't own listed on my tax prefill as income. The listed NAB account number on my tax prefill is [Removed by moderator]. In 2022-2023, the amount listed as income was $327.18

I have rung NAB and they have confirmed it is not my bank account but belongs to someone else. Between calls to both entities, it seems that someone has used my tax file number and I cannot correct this. My accountant says that I have to wait until the ATO corrects this. I had my 2022-2023 tax ready to submit but this needs correcting as someone else's income is listing as mine.

In summary, last year I queried an incorrect amount in the tax prefill. This year again (2022-2023) there it is again. NAB account but it is not mine - listed account number is [Removed by moderator] - nor have NAB got any record of me having an account with them. The ATO advised that they have someone else's details under my name. I had a very frustrating day ringing between NAB, ANZ, Medibank Private, Computershare Investor Services, and the ATO. This process was challenging and there seems little I can do plus won't get my day back.

Can you help fix this incorrect issue? Otherwise it will continue to happen on the next prefill 2023-2024.

While my 2022-2023 tax is waiting to submit, I would like this matter sorted first.

Kind regards,

Julie

Hi @jwillems

Each year, the ATO collects data from a number of different sources. Some of it is made available to us by the process known as “Pre-Fill”.

The ATO knows this data is not perfect.

That is why we need to review it and not just rely on it blindly when preparing our tax return.

IF the bank interest is not yours, you simply leave it out of your tax return.

The ATO also runs a process known as “Data Matching” . Once you submit your tax return, the ATO will match the provided information with the information in its system.

If there is a discrepancy, the ATO will review it and they may contact you or your accountant to understand the issue

You may get a letter saying that the interest has been left out and the ATO will amend your return unless you contact them. In this case, simply call the provided number and tell them it’s not yours.

I understand it’s frustrating that the pre fill isn’t correct, but try not to worry about it. It will sort itself out.

Hi Julie,

It may be as simple as someone quoting an incorrect TFN.

Just calling the ATO and telling them it is not yours will not do anything as the ATO will not just accept your word for it, and if you let it go it will just keep happening to you.

The NAB should have at least referred the matter internally to try and sort it out from their end, for example they can easily see who owns the account so they can contact that person to verify their TFN. Naturally they will not give you any details about that person. Also keep in mind that if the NAB correct it at their end you still need to get the ATO to correct the past errors for you.

Maybe go a NAB branch and talk to the manager about this and ask them what they can do about it going forward. Bring a copy of the section of your prefill that shows the bank details so they can see what your talking about.

While you are there get a letter from them stating that the specific account is not yours or at the very that you do not have any accounts current or closed with the NAB.

Then lodge a complaint with the ATO, and make sure you tell them that you have a letter from the NAB confirming your position or that you are going to try and get a letter asap.

This process can be very frustrating depending on the ATO officer that is assigned to your case, and if you feel your not getting anywhere you can discuss with that persons team leader or even ask to speak to the director of their area. If you want to lodge a complaint you need to lodge it soon because as soon as the next financial year starts on 1 july the number of tax complaints escaltes dramatically and you could be waiting weeks just for the first call back which will be from a "resolver", which is basically just a mediator between you and the ATO officer that will be assigned the case..

If your going to lodge a complaint and want the matter sorted before you lodge your rtn , have a think about calling the ATO and asking for an extension of time to lodge. This is also something you can discuss with the complaints officer that take your initial complaint.

I have come across this type of issue in the past, and back then ATO officers would actually contact the bank directly and even access their records to verify who the actual owner of a bank account is, before any action was taken, and the process was slow.

hope this helps and it works out for you.

Hi,

Just wanted to add incase someone else has my problem, i thought i had the same problem as you described as do not own NAB account, but then checked my records, UBank went through an account restructure to its customers over the last few years which is owned by NAB and issued new account information, account number ATO has in its records matched up to my new Ubank details, if i check my pre-fill 2023-2024 i no longer have Ubank and only NAB listed even though i technically do not have an NAB account.

@tighthips

Hit the nail on the head.

The NAB interest noted in ATO prefill is actually Ubank data.

I had the same issue.

For some reason the interest is now showing as National Bank of Australia Limited.

Presume as they've moved to a new platform, they are now reporting to ATO as such rather than presumably as Ubank previously.

Only problem is NAB staff don't seem to know as an hour conversation this afternoon with someone on the phone and him having to check with his supervisor didn't resolve the issue as they could only advise the account numbers provided are shorter than theirs.

Someone needs to let the NAB staff know to save the runaround.

ATO also couldn't assist and only advised I needed to get NAB to send updated details to remove from Mytax.

A lot of running around due to this confusion.

I'll know next year.
