I own and live in my own home and i am currently renting out one room to two friends (A couple) for 150$ each (300$ total) per week for one year. This amount goes towards bills and our mortgage, however my partner and I still have to pay a significant amount to cover the rest of the mortgage. With this situation, do I have to declare this as income tax?, and if so can I claim deductions on my house such as repairs?.

Hi @Tom166,

It depends, it may be classed as a domestic arrangement, and you don't need to declare it to us. If what they're paying only covers their bills, then we generally see it as a domestic arrangement.

To be able to claim any deductions the money you receive as rent will need to be declared as income on your tax return.
