I received a payment from the ATO last night but have not received an email to say why
it was a "direct credit" of $158
it came from a account -ATO005000019394973
with a reference number but struggling to find information as to why I received it anyone know what this could be

That's usually what a payment from us looks like. If you have access to ATO online via myGov you can check your statement of accounts to see what the payment might be for.
Go to Tax > Accounts > Summary. Click on the account name to check the transactions.
You can also review your Communication history from us.
Hopefully that'll clear things up!
