I am working for a company in India and relocating to Australia because I got PR in Australia.

I am planning to continue working(remotely) for the Indian company for some time (unsure how long) and do not know what this means for my tax liabilities in either Country.

A couple of questions:

  1. I already pay tax in India, do I need to again pay tax in Australia?
  2. I am getting the salary in India, will there be any tax if I move funds from India to Australia as I am living in Australia and need funds for my expenses

Hello @Qwertyuiop12345,

Here in Australia when you lodge your return you'll have a chance to ask for the foreign income tax offset.

This is where you declare the tax you paid in the other country, and we apply a credit to your return. This is used to lower the impact of any type of double taxation.

  1. Confirm your tax residency per Your tax residency | Australian Taxation Office (ato.gov.au)
    1. If you're an australian tax resident, then you should confirm if there's a double tax agreement with India per Income Tax Treaties | Treasury.gov.au
  2. Depending on your tax residency and existence of a double tax treaty, you will either:
    1. Be an indian tax resident, paying tax in India on your Australian income.
    2. By an indian tax resident, reporting the Australian tax you've paid as a foreign tax credit in your indian tax return.
    3. Be an australian tax resident, paying tax in Australia on your indian income.
    4. Be an australian tax resident, reporting the indian tax you've paid as a foreign tax credit in your australian tax return.

I am an Australian tax resident for sure, as I am living in Australia and there is a double tax treaty between India and Australia, but not sure what it means in terms of taxes.

I am already paying tax in India as tds gets deducted from my salary automatically.
