I am a therapist and have a regular full-time job with a fixed workplace (Point A) . I work as a causal mobile therapist after my full time job ends each day. I travel from point A to B, C or DEFG etc each day and then go back home after I finish my causal work.

Can I claim the mileage when I go back home from Point BCDEFG etc ? I still have go through paperworks and documentation at home.

In addition, do I need to keep the physical tax invoice for the fuel in order to claim ? or just record the cost, maybe in an excel file, everytime I refuel ?

If I later resign my full time and just work as a mobile therapist, and have to go to my clients home from my home, would this kind of travel count as business mileage ?

Hope someone would answer me. ATO website info is not that specific for my condition.

Thanks !

Hi @abcpsp,

You sound like you're kept very busy!

Yes, you can claim the fuel you use in your business as a sole trader. You'll need to keep receipts as proof of purchase when making your claim. If you use your vehicle for both personal and business use, then you'll only be able to claim a percentage of the total fuel cost.

If home is the base of your employment, then there are 3 conditions that you have to meet to be able to claim your travel from home to work.

Generally travelling from your last place of work to home is a personal expense and won't be able to be claimed.

Check out the info we have for small businesses and motor vehicle expenses that can be claimed.

For the fuel receipt, do I need to keep a physical receipt ? Or can I save an e copy by scanning it ? I worried that words on the physical receipt would fade out.

@RileyATO

Thank you ! I saw that on the apps, adding photo is optional. Is it better to take a photos as well then just entering the amount on the apps ?

Another question is that sometimes I prepay the fuel by buying gift card for more discounts on fuel, e.g. When i buy $50 gift card online and refueling costs me $61, I pay $11 by debit card. The receipt usually show I pay $11 only. How can I record this kind of fuel expense ?
