Roughly ten years ago now I was employed by a company in Sydney.
About a year into my role I was advised by the accountant at the company that my tax file number was incorrect and would be amended. I do not believe this ever happened as the accountant resigned and left a few days later and her replacement likely wasn't aware.
For years I have been trying to resolve this and now the company no longer exists.
What do I do? Because the tax deductions were made from my pay but to the wrong person and this was entirely not my doing.
I am concerned because now my ATO account shows amounts owed in excess of $5000 and I have no way of proving I paid these amounts except old bank transfers to my account.
I've contacted ATO multiple times and was told I would be contacted but never have been.
